In response, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu told the U.N. that "Israel will not allow Iran to get nuclear weapons." The Oct. 2 poll, conducted for Israeli newspaper Israel Hayom, a conservative newspaper that has the largest daily circulation in Israel, reveals deep Israeli public skepticism over Iran's true intentions. Raz Zimmt, an expert on Iran at the Alliance Center for Iranian Studies at Tel Aviv University, said the poll "Reflects a genuine fear among Israelis that the diplomatic rapproachment" between Iran and the U.S. could leave Israel "Isolated." Most Israelis, Zimmt said, "Are really concerned that an agreement between Iran and the West would leave Iran's nuclear capabilities intact." If such an agreement is reached, it could limit Israel's ability to strike unilaterally, even if it feels threatened, Zimmt said.
