Study: Feeling Small Makes People More Paranoid

Women made shorter in a virtual reality situation compared themselves more negatively to others and reported more paranoid feelings. Previous research has shown that tall people enjoy all kinds of advantages: They reach higher education levels, get better jobs, earn more, and just generally feel better about their lives. Riding the virtual train while smaller made people evaluate themselves more negatively compared with others, and they had greater levels of paranoia as well. When made to feel smaller, we feel more vulnerable, and thus expect people to be out to get us more.

Batteries on planes pose 'increased fire risk'

Now the UK's safety regulator, the Civil Aviation Authority, has told the BBC that the huge growth in people carrying lithium batteries on aircraft poses a growing fire risk. California college to offer non-approved meningitis vaccine

Students at a California public university where meningococcal disease broke out in the fall will be offered a vaccine not approved for use in the United States, public health officials said on Friday. The outbreak, which resulted in a student having his feet amputated, is similar to the one that struck eight students at Princeton University in New Jersey, where students won approval to use the same foreign vaccine in the fall. California health officials sought access to the vaccine for the Santa Barbara students in December amid renewed concern about meningococcal disease, which is highly contagious among people who live in close quarters, such as college students. In a statement released to students, parents and employees on Friday, officials at UC Santa Barbara said they would make the vaccine available to students free of charge next month.

The technique could be suitable for people with a limited number of follicles, including those with female-pattern hair loss, scarring alopecia and hair loss due to burns.

Australia approves dumping dredged mud around Great Barrier Reef

Australia approved a plan to dump large amounts of mud and sediment into the oceans surrounding the Great Barrier Reef - making room for developers to expand a coal port on the country's eastern coast on Friday. Environment Minister Greg Hunt has vowed that "Some of the strictest conditions in Australian history" will be in place to protect the reef from harm, including water quality measures and safeguards for the reef's plants and animals. On Friday, the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority - the government manager of the 133,360 square mile protected marine zone - approved an application by the state-owned North Queensland Bulk Ports Corp. In a report released in 2012, UNESCO expressed concern about development along the reef, including ports, and warned that the marine park was at risk of being listed as a World Heritage site in danger.

That's why astronomers are excited about a captivating new discovery: a face-on, full-fledged spiral galaxy that's a staggering 10.7 billion light years away - meaning the image is 10.7 billion years old. In order to confirm that the galaxy was truly the spiral shape that the Hubble image suggested it was, Law and his colleagues had to play with light another way. How did the galaxy grow up so fast? Galaxies spin for the same reason the Earth does: angular momentum that imparts a permanent rotation as primal dust contracts into discrete bodies. "It's probably telling us the importance of mergers in helping produce or at least accentuate the spiral structure we see in galaxies." The Milky Way too is attended by a dwarf galaxy, which may have played a formative similar role.

Tribute: Sally Ride, First American Woman in Space

Here's how Sally Ride knew she was special: The day she was assigned to her first space flight, she was summoned to meet with Chris Kraft. Ride flew a second time, in 1984, also aboard Challenger. By the mid 1970s that had changed just enough that Ride could apply to she shuttle program - one of 8,000 astronaut candidates given consideration, By 1978, she was named part of an incoming astronaut class that included five other women and 29 men. Ride - not the first person in space, not even the first woman in space - will never be in the pantheon of Glenn or Armstrong or Gagarin or Leonov or Lovell or Shepard.
